ViewScience is a NASA
sponsored project developing a freeware Flash-based image
viewer for museums. This customizable and extensible software
is made available for free for use on the museum floor or
on the Internet. The software can be customized and many of
the features can be turned on or off. In addition to a “Viewer
Mode” we hope to develop a “Slide Show Mode” for next version.
ViewScience Features: •
Image sequences: Up to 12 images can appear in each
set. • Thumbnail viewer: Allows visitors
to pan and zoom images. • Caption: A text description of
the image. • Annotation: Up to 5 annotations can be
attached to any region of any single image. These can be use
to point out specific features or details. These can be
turned-off by the user. • Compelling Question: A simple way
to direct users to a question that the image might present.
They could point to unusual qualities of an image. • Other
image information: Credit, Author, Instrument, Mission,
Date.
ViewScience was developed
with a NASA
IDEAS grant. The project's participants are: The Center for Science
Education at UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory, Chabot Space and
Science Center and Ideum--an interactive
multimedia firm.
